Carrington came from a civilian background and was commissioned as the new colonel of the 18th U. S. Infantry in 1861. He was made a Brigadier General of volunteers in 1862 and performed recruiting duty in Indiana, as well as holding illegal military tribunals while ruthlessly suppressing disloyal citizens. Most famous for his part (he was the commander of Fort Phil Kearny) in the famous "Fetterman Massacre" that took place in 1866.
