Washington's Retreat Through the Jerseys 1776 (Ward 1927) PDF by Dr. William R. Ward (NJHS 1927, 9pp, PDF 134K) After the Battle
of Long Island where the Americans were out-numbered and out-generaled,
the Continental Army beat a hasty and disorderly retreat though New York,
losing about a thousand prisoners including Generals Sullivan and Lord Stirling.
Then followed the disaster at Kips Bay and the further actions at White
Plains. Fort Washington was lost, and a garrison of some three thousand
were sent to the prison ships. Abandoning Fort Lee, Washington began his
retreat from Hackensack to Newark, and from thence, pursued by Gen. Cornwallis,
to Elizabeth, Rahway, New Brunswick, and on to safety across the Delaware
at Trenton. This was the darkest period of the Revolution, when even the
most minor error on the part of Gen. Washington could have lost the war.
